On mobile, computer, console or other medium, video games affect all age categories, men and women alike.

Video games have become an activity that affects all French people, regardless of their age or sex. The latest report from the Syndicate of Leisure Software Publishers (SELL) quantifies this French passion for gaming.

Almost as many women as men

We learn that 95% of children and 68% of adults are considered gamblers, according to the methodology used by Mediametrie, mandated by the SELL for the implementation of this survey.

The higher the age group, the lower the share of gamblers among the population. But it still remains high for each generation: 63% of 50-64 year olds and 41% of 65 year olds and over play video games.

Parity is almost respected for all players, including occasional players, with 51% men and 49% women, for an average age of 40 years for men and 39 years for women. Among the 53% of French people who say they gamble regularly, 53% are men and 47% are women. The average age does not move among women while it loses 2 years among men in this case, dropping to 38 years.

Multi games are popular among young people

On average, a player uses 2.2 game media. 31% of respondents use at least three media. Unsurprisingly, the smartphone dominates the debates: it is used by 54% of French players. But the console, portable or living room, is resisting, with 52% of players who use it. The computer is acclaimed at 41%, and the touch pad, at 24%. These two media attract the oldest players, with an average of 42 years old each (compared to 39 years old on a smartphone, 33 years old on a home console and 31 years old on a portable console).

On smartphones, casual and social games dominate. On computers, strategy games are the most played, while consoles give pride of place to action games, car racing and sports.

97% have already played a single-player game, compared to 60% for a multiplayer game, whether online or locally. Multiplayer attracts much more young people (83% of 10-17 year olds) than adults (57%). 31% of respondents say online gaming has helped them make friends, and 32% feel like they belong to a community.
