49 years old, 20 cult films, 1 Oscar: when will we see this world star again in the cinema?

On the occasion of the broadcast of “The Great Gatsby” on Chérie 25, we take stock of the upcoming projects of Leonardo DiCaprio who should soon reunite with his favorite director, Martin Scorsese!

On the occasion of the broadcast of The Great Gatsby this evening on Chérie 25, we take stock of the projects coming up for Leonardo Dicaprio. From Paul Thomas Anderson to a probable reunion with Martin Scorsese, what’s coming is tempting! However, you will have to wait at least until summer 2025 to see a new film with the actor!

DiCaprio for the first time at PTA

After Licorice Pizza, director Paul Thomas Anderson is already back behind the camera for a still enigmatic project. No synopsis, no title! But we now know the release date! This event film will be released on August 6, 2025.

All we know at the moment is that the story will unfold “in a contemporary setting” and will be produced by Warner Bros. Deadline reported that this will be the project “the most commercial attempted by Paul Thomas Anderson with a substantial budget.”

A mysterious project still untitled

After his acclaimed performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the new film by Paul Thomas Anderson.

This is the first time that DiCaprio will play under the direction of the American director, to whom we owe Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and The Master. The two men almost collaborated in 1997 on Boogie Nights but DiCaprio preferred to set his sights on James Cameron’s proposal for a certain Titanic.

On the social network X (formerly Twitter), photos from the shoot were revealed, showing DiCaprio in his character’s outfit. Dressed in a sort of checkered dressing gown, cap screwed on his head and protruding mustache, the actor sports an astonishing look, totally different from his other roles.

In these photos, DiCaprio appears to play a homeless man wandering the streets, stopping in front of a supermarket to call from a public telephone booth.

Sean Penn and Reginal Hall will opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

See you in theaters on August 6, 2025.

Towards a 7th collaboration with Marty?

After Paul Thomas Anderson, Leonardo Dicaprio could find his favorite director with whom he has already worked in 6 feature films, the latest being Killers of the Flower Moon. According to VarietyScorsese is expected to begin directing a Sinatra film with Dicaprio in the title role right after his Jesus film, which he is currently preparing.

Leonardo DiCaprio would play the famous singer opposite Jennifer Lawrence, who would play his second wife, Ava Gardner.

A long-standing project

This work has been in Scorsese’s head for many years, although he threw in the towel in 2017. “We can’t do it. I think it’s definitely ruined. Sinatra’s heirs don’t agree. But if the situation resolves, I’ll be there!”he confided to Toronto Sun 7 years ago.

“Some things are difficult for a family, and I completely understand that. But if they expect me to do it, they can’t not tell me everything. He was a complex man. Everyone is complex, but Sinatra was truly a special case.”he added, suggesting that he did not intend to stage a self-indulgent biopic on this star who died in 1998.

Indeed, many elements of Sinatra’s life might not please the deceased’s family. The actor-singer’s links with the mafia or his chaotic private life are among the probable causes of the disagreement with Scorsese, who would obviously have liked to address even the artist’s gray areas.

Note that musical biopics are on the rise at the moment with Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocket Man, Elvis and Bob Marley. James Mangold is preparing a film on Bob Dylan with Timothée Chalamet and Antoine Fuqua is making a feature film around Michael Jackson. Furthermore, Back to Black, a biopic on Amy Winehouse, which arrived in theaters on April 24.

A project with Marty can hide another!

In the columns of the Times, Scorsese discussed another project he is working on. The filmmaker could reunite with DiCaprio for another project: Castaways of the Wager. This is the adaptation of a book by David Grann, already author of The American Notethe work that inspired Killers of the Flower Moon.

In 2023, Apple acquired the rights (for several million dollars according to the specialized press) to his new book, The Wager Shipwrecks, available since April in the United States and published in August in France. The acclaimed novel remained the 3rd best seller in the essays category, fourteen weeks after its publication.

According to the New York Times, the book has already sold tens of thousands of copies, topping their bestseller list. Former President Barack Obama also included it on his traditional summer reading list.

David Grann is now famous for being a great specialist in historical investigations. He is also considered one of the masters of literary journalism. In 2016, he had already broken all records after selling the rights to Killers of the Flower Moon to Apple TV for $5 million.

What is Les Naufragés du Wager about?

Based on a true story, Les Naufragés du Wager takes place in 1740. Her Majesty’s ship of the line, the HMS Wager, with 250 officers and crew on board, is sent into a squad under the command of Commodore Anson on a secret mission to plunder the cargoes of a Spanish Empire galleon. After passing Cape Horn, the Wager was shipwreck.

A handful of unfortunate people survive on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. With chaos and deaths piling up, and faced with the near absence of vital resources and hostile conditions, some people resort to cannibalism, mutinies break out, and the captain commits a murder in front of witnesses. Three groups clash over the strategy to adopt to escape.

While everyone believed that the entire crew of the Wager had disappeared, a first group of 29 survivors reappeared in Brazil 283 days after the maritime disaster. Then three more survivors reached Brazil 3 and a half months later.

But once they return to Anglican lands, another war begins, stories this time, in order to save his honor and his life in front of the Admiralty and the general public. “Based on the logbooks of the captains and a gunner who handled both the pen and the artillery, this fascinating story is devoured like a marine thriller, with your teeth clinging to the rail”, writes Sophie Creuz in L’Echo.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s a long story in any case! The two artists have gone through more than 20 years of cinema together since their first joint film, Gangs of New York (2002). After this masterstroke, they will offer us Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street and the latest, Killers of the Flower Moon.
