For 57 minutes, the duel between Yverdon and Lugano presented itself as what it was: the meeting of two struggling teams. Both teams had been without a win in five league games, so the game was approached cautiously.

But just before the hour mark, the spell suddenly broke. Within five minutes, Lugano went from 0-0 to 3-0 – with suddenly merciless efficiency and kind help:

  • 57th minute: Albian Hajdari receives the ball outside the penalty area. He takes a shot and his shot bounces poorly. Nevertheless, Yverdon goalie Kevin Martin doesn’t look good.
  • 59th minute: Less than 120 seconds after making it 1-0, Lugano celebrates again. A steep pass reaches Zan Celar, he defeats Martin from an acute angle.
  • 62nd minute: The decision. After a cross, the ball remains in play thanks to the post, Celar goes for a flying header at shin height and feeds the ball into the empty goal.

That’s not enough. After a corner, Kreshnik Hajrizi was completely free in the penalty area to head the ball – 4-0. And in stoppage time, Boris Babic was completely free and even made it 5-0. The now visibly liberated Luganesi played their way to their second victory of the season against Yverdon, having won 6-1 in the Cornaredo in August.

Mangiarratti still without a win

Alessandro Mangiarratti remained winless in his third game as Yverdon coach. The Ticino native is slipping deeper and deeper into the crisis with his club and is also out of the top 6 in the table. Lugano now occupies this place.

This is how it goes

Both teams have to play next time on Sunday. Yverdon will then face FC St. Gallen away (2:15 p.m.), Lugano will host FC Luzern (4:30 p.m.). Lugano also plays in the Conference League beforehand, on Thursday at 6:45 p.m. in the Conference League against Bodö/Glimt.
