5.1 surround sound on YouTube TV is available on Google TV/Android TV


YouTube TV announces 5.1 surround sound compatibility on Google TV, Android TV and Roku devices.

YouTube TV must provide 5.1 surround sound in a broader way. After the Chromecast, Samsung, LG and Vizio devices, it’s the turn of the Google TV/Android TV and Roku systems to see the arrival of 5.1. We already knew since last March that YouTube TV was testing 5.1 sound on these platforms.

As a reminder, YouTube TV is an American service launched in February 2017 that allows you to watch live television programs and consume video on demand. With it, you can access the main American networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Discovery, etc.

5.1 audio on YouTube TV rolls out to Google TV/Android TV

YouTube TV said on Twitter that “5.1 audio is rolling out to Google TV, Android TV and Roku devices this week“. Furthermore, he stated that he worksinternally and with partners to enable 5.1 on Apple TV, Fire TV and game consoles“. It is indeed in the interest of YouTube TV to be accessible from as many terminals as possible.

This deployment is a priori automatic. Dolby Surround 5.1 is meant to work anytime you watch a compatible TV program, on a compatible system and/or device. Note that you also need a compatible speaker system to enjoy this more immersive sound and that some channels available on YouTube TV simply do not offer this audio system.

You can check that 5.1 surround is working properly by looking at the “statistics for nerds“. If enabled, then the codec “AC-3/EAC-3will be displayed.
