  • The Swiss U21s convincingly beat Wales 5-1 in the European Championship qualifier in Lausanne.
  • Mauro Lustrinelli’s team laid the foundation for success with 3 early goals between the 12th and 20th minutes.
  • Because the Netherlands only draw against Bulgaria, the Swiss lead in the table is now 5 points (in one game more).

It was a furious performance that the U21 footballers put on at the Stade de la Tuilière. In front of well over 6,000 spectators – there were only twice as many in the roughly two-year-old stadium – the Swiss dominated the action from the start. And they were rewarded with 3 early goals:

  • 12 minutes: Dan Ndoye has plenty of space on the right. He serves Felix Mambimbi in the middle, who meets the Swiss leadership.
  • 15 minutes: This time Ndoye nets himself. His shot from the edge of the box is too placed for Wales goalkeeper Nathan Shepperd.
  • 20 minutes: Again, Switzerland convinces with a consistently played attack. Kastriot Imeri launches Zeki Amdouni, who makes the preliminary decision.

Coach Mauro Lustrinelli’s team continued to dominate the game after the break. It was Wales, however, who celebrated a goal on goal in the 46th minute. Jack Robert Vale served Joseph Adams, who shortened to 1:3. The reaction of the Swiss was violent. Just 40 seconds after conceding, the strong Ndoye chose to score twice. And Amdouni was also able to celebrate his second goal a little later.

Direct duel against the Netherlands

Thanks to the 3 points gained, Switzerland now has 19 points in the table. Because the Netherlands, the first pursuers, only played 0-0 against Bulgaria, Switzerland can extend the lead to 5 points. “Oranje” has one game less on the account. Next Tuesday there will be a direct duel in the race for participation in the 2023 European Championships in Romania and Georgia.
