A long extract from “Dune: Part Two” has just been posted online. We discover Timothée Chalamet learning Fremen habits and customs, and his confrontation with an immense sandworm on Arrakis.
Sandworms, or Shai-Hulud for purists, haunted the first part of Dune, without them ever really being visible on screen. At least in their omnipotence.
Indeed, with the exception of an attack on a vehicle responsible for extracting the spice, a quick face to face at dusk between Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and one of these creatures, and a promising vision at the end of the feature film revealing a Fremen “piloting” a worm, their real scale had until now only been suggested by Denis Villeneuve.
A few days before the release of Dune: Part II, the filmmaker unveils a complete sequence from the feature film, eagerly awaited by readers of Frank Herbert’s novels. We discover the young hero confronted with an enormous Shai-Hulud (“Not so big!” launches with concern his mentor Javier Bardem) at the top of an Arrakis dune, while he must tame the monster to confirm his status as prophet (or Lisan al Gaib) in the eyes of Chani (Zendaya) and the people of the desert .
As realistic as they are impressive, almost raw, the images are astonishing and promise a great spectacle, while the film, lasting 2 hours 46 minutes, will be, according to its director, more rhythmic and more intense. Christopher Nolan, who is among the first privileged people to have discovered Dune: Part II, even compares it to The Empire Strikes Back where others see it as a science fiction Dark Knight.
A real event of the first cinema half-year, this second part is expected on February 28 on French screens, and a few days before for the lucky spectators who were able to get their ticket for the Parisian preview, the seats of which were sold out in less than ‘one minute (!). In the meantime, the first opus is released in cinemas from February 7. And so there is this first 5-minute extract to watch again and again… knowing that there will be 2h41 of unseen images waiting for you in cinemas at the end of the month.
