5 nail myths to forget to perfect your manicure

While we think we know them inside out, our nails still have many secrets for us and some received ideas do not help us to perfect their beauty … In this article, we reveal 5 myths about nails which we must get rid of!

Who has never dreamed of displaying long, strong and healthy nails, perfectly manicured? The problem is that more often than not, we do not necessarily do it the right way to achieve this goal. But then, how is it that we still make so many mistakes when it comes to sublimating our pretty nails? Everything suggests that some stereotypes are not necessarily beneficial to our manicures. Yes, not all advice is good to take, and this rule also applies to nail beauty in general! So, in order to make sure that your efforts have real results on the appearance of your nails, here is now five myths which you need to get rid of as quickly as possible:

Myth # 1: nails need to breathe

You’ve probably heard that fingernails need to breathe, but that doesn’t really make sense. Indeed, the latter receive everything they need (nutrients and oxygen) via the blood flow and not through the ambient air. This is why, what poses a problem, it is not the lack of oxygen associated with frequent varnishing of the nails, but rather the use of aggressive products to do so. Beyond that, the other factor that can affect the health of the nails when they are varnished is the lack of hydration and care, which, once again, has nothing to do with oxygenation of our nails.

Myth # 2: white spots on nails are a testament to calcium deficiency

Again, this is wrong! This is because if these little white spots don’t appear for no reason, they have little to do with your calcium levels. Superficial, they appear more where the keratin is altered after the nail has undergone a microtrauma. If you are particularly prone to these kinds of small spots, it certainly means that your nails are lacking in strength. However, don’t worry: these whitish marks are very common and simply disappear as the nail grows. In order to prevent their appearance, there is therefore no point in trying to increase your calcium level, only care and hydration will have a real impact on the general condition of your nails!

Myth # 3: cuticles need to be cut regularly

If for you “perfect manicure” rhymes with “absence of cuticles” (mean the small skins covering the edges of our nails), know that you are neither completely wrong nor completely right. Indeed, for the beauty of the nail to be successful, it is necessary that the latter is clearly clear of everything that could interfere with the application of the varnish (cuticles included), however: cutting them is not the solution to achieve such a result. Most importantly, you risk injuring yourself or causing an infection. This is one of the most common mistakes when it comes to manicure! The perfect compromise for nicely varnished, but protected nails? Gently push back your cuticles using a small stick provided for this purpose, after having moisturized them to soften them. To do this, you can for example use a moisturizer for the hands or even a vegetable oil, the 100% natural alternative. This will make the process even easier!

Myth # 4: false nails damage natural nails

While many believe that gel nails deteriorate the natural nails underneath, this is actually not the case. Indeed, this technique is even one of the safest for performing a manicure without weakening the nails, because in addition to not altering them, it protects them from external aggressions. In reality, it is the installation and removal of gel nails that can do the damage! The use of chemicals, excessive filing and sanding of the nail plate… These are all actions that permanently weaken the nail. What must be remembered, therefore, is that it is not the gel nails in themselves that damage natural nails, but the whole process that accompanies their installation and their removal.

Myth # 5: cold water helps polish dry faster

This would be the foolproof trick to make your nail polish dry faster: dip your freshly varnished fingertips in cold water for quick drying. Well, know that it is still a question of a received idea which, taken at face value, could well ruin your pretty manicure! This is because cold – or even ice-cold – water does not help the varnish to dry faster and could even slow down the process. It’s a fact: since nail polish is a polymer formed by a chemical reaction, lowering the temperature only delays the reaction. If you have the impression to the contrary, it is simply because the varnish tends to harden on the surface in contact with the cold, which does not mean that it is dry. We can imagine that if this technique were so effective, it would certainly be more widespread in beauty salons.
