5 tips for calmly carrying out a self-test for your child

If your child is a contact case, the health protocol at school provides for three self-tests a few days apart. But, as a parent, how should you go about gently carrying out a self-test for your child? We enlighten you.

The dilemma of self-tests, a good number of parents of pupils are confronted with it today. Since the return from the Christmas holidays, the health protocol at school has been revised and lightened, three times in the space of a few days. Now, as soon as a positive case in a class, children must carry out a self-test as soon as possible, then two others on D+2 and D+4 to be able to return to class.

Only here, if on the instructions the task turns out to be easy, the reality is quite different. Because it is no longer up to trained health professionals to take care of it, but to parents. A responsibility that weighs more and more on families. Lately, on social networks and in the media, some parents take the floor and tell the ordeal tests on their children. A pharmacy assistant had also sounded the alarm on her Instagram account, reporting the impact of health measures. “Children cry, struggle, scream to death, are held down by their parents, too, at the end of their tether”, she said in part.

So at home, what are the reflexes to have to serenely carry out a self-test in the youngest? Here are our tips.

Reassure the child as much as possible

Explaining to him, with simple words, what is a self-test. For it, describe and mime tell the child what you are going to do to him. You can use a bottle brush and a glass or narrower tube to show her how a swab works in her nose. Above all, do not lie to him by telling him that he will not feel anything, rather tell him that it may tickle him but that it will only last a few seconds. Reassure him by putting him in confidence!

Keep calm

It’s human to be afraid of hurting your child by doing a self-test, or being stressed. After all, you are not an expert in the matter. However, don’t panic and do not show your toddler that you are dreading the moment, on the contrary. Be sure of yourself and stay calm. And if necessary, do a self-test in front of him to reassure him as much as possible.

Prepare in advance

To gain confidence in front of your child, prepare in advance by reading correctly the user manual of the self-test. Unpack all necessary materials so that you have it at your fingertips at the moment.

Settle in a quiet place

It is better to get together with the child in a quiet room, without disturbing elements, so that he is not distracted during the act.

Then ask your child to sit down and perform the act once he is relaxed. If his nose is congested, don’t hesitate to tell him to blow his nose.

Gently move

To successfully complete a self-test on your child, follow the instructions correctly. Take the swab and introduce it, gently and not too far, into your child’s nostril. Rotate 5 to 10 times against the walls for 7 seconds, and repeat in the other nostril.

Immerse the swab in the tube with the solution while shaking for one minute, then pour a few drops on the strip and wait for the result for the time indicated on the instructions.

After 15 minutes (no more), if there are two colored bands on the plate, this means that the child is positive and must remain isolated. If there is only one band in the control C area, he is negative and can return to school.
