This is indicated in the 6th report of the Confidential National Inquiry into Maternal Deaths, led by gynecologists, anesthetists and midwives, under the scientific responsibility of Inserm and placed under the supervision of Public Health. France. According to the figures, between 2013 and 2015, 262 maternal deaths were recorded in France, including 10 in Brittany, 8 in Pays de la Loire and 10 in Normandy. This represents 87 women who died from a cause related to pregnancy, childbirth or their consequences.

In the majority of cases, these deaths were "avoidable or possibly avoidable". But in the other cases, 13.7% of women died of cardiovascular disease, 13.4% of suicides and 11% of amniotic embolism. Obstetric haemorrhages only represent 8% of deaths. "And the frequency of this cause of death has been reduced by two in fifteen years" , Note the study researchers.

Mortality factors

In addition, there are certain factors to consider during pregnancy, such as age. In fact, a woman aged between 35 and 39 has a risk of maternal mortality three times higher. A woman over 40 is four times more likely to die. A woman’s weight can also have an impact on her pregnancy, with 24.2% of maternal deaths occurring in obese women.

Living conditions can also influence pregnancy or childbirth. Indeed, a woman who resides in an overseas department would be four times more at risk of death compared to those who live in metropolitan areas.
