50 years of VW Golf – A new level of maturity: The Golf III

The Golf is the heart of the Volkswagen brand: With the Golf III, the Golf had visually changed more visibly than with the previous model change. And yet the Wolfsburg designers once again succeeded in constructing it that is still clearly recognizable as a Golf. With the third edition, Volkswagen also ushered in a new era of safety from August 1991. Together with VW we are celebrating 50 years of golf – and you can win.

By the start of the third edition at the end of 1991, the million-seller Golf had reached a level of development that seemed reserved for the upper class just a few years ago. The VW Golf III was a little more aerodynamic and the drag coefficient fell to 0.30. Right from the start, the third generation was available with seven engine variants, including a sensation: an ultra-compact six-cylinder, the first in the Golf class. It was also important to the developers to further increase the safety aspects of the Golf. The third generation introduced the driver and front passenger airbags, and later the side airbags integrated into the front seats. From the 1997 model year, all Golf models were delivered with ABS as standard. However, the Plus chassis was reserved for the VR6 and the GTI. A new chapter in special models. For the first time, the Golf was now also built as a station wagon, traditionally called Variant. Syncro all-wheel drive was still available. The Color Concept with a completely styled leather interior that matches the exterior color opened a new chapter in terms of special models. Arrangements with cult bands such as the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Bon Jovi opened up further opportunities for marketing individually equipped vehicles. By 1997, the Golf III had been built a total of 4.8 million times, continuing the environmental theme. The eco-Golf Ecomatic from 1993 now used an automatic swing function to save fuel. The rapeseed oil Golf refueled alternatively, as the CitySTROMer, the Golf III with an 18 kW (24 hp) electric motor was the world’s first electric series car. In 1994, Volkswagen finally strengthened the program with the Golf VR6 syncro, which received a 2.9 liter, 140 kW (190 hp) six-cylinder. Win now: 1 year of driving the VW Golf Rabbit.
