50 years of VW Golf – The fourth generation: style icon Golf IV

To this day, it is the most successful Volkswagen and best-selling European car of all time: The Golf captured the zeitgeist, became the namesake of its class and accompanies generations of people worldwide. The Golf IV, introduced in 1997, is now considered a style icon. We celebrate together with VW – and you can win.

The fourth generation of the Golf had its world premiere at the 1997 IAA International Motor Show. This also joined the ranks of its predecessors with dignity and once again set new standards. Their strengths lay in the consistency and continuity of their design. The Golf IV is certainly considered a style icon today because, with its clarity and the C-pillar design that characterized the series, it built a bridge to the Golf I of 1974. The Golf had now undeniably matured into a premium vehicle. New quality standard in the segment The interior of the new series in particular impressed with its high quality. The basic model of the VW Golf IV already included four airbags, and side head airbags were also available as an option. From model year 2000, ESP was part of the basic equipment on the Golf – the first in its class. In 2002, Volkswagen presented the sportiest Golf to date based on the fourth generation: the 250 km/h R32. In 2003 it was the first Volkswagen to receive a dual clutch transmission (DSG). The diesel segment also experienced a further leap in development thanks to the new pump-injector technology, which produced up to 110 kW (150 hp) from the 1.9-liter TDI. Volkswagen celebrated the millennium in style with the delivery of the twenty millionth Golf. In 2003, after 4.9 million units, the Golf IV gave up space on the production line for the Golf V.
