57% fossil energy – Getting out of oil and gas is a real mammoth task

Fossil energy sources still dominate in Tyrol. According to the country’s current listing, oil heating is the undisputed number one source of heat. But in view of the current crises, many want to switch. The only problem: It doesn’t go that fast!

Tyrol is a land of oil heating. Still! And this despite the fact that the country formulated the goal of phasing out fossil fuels years ago. 100,000 Tyroleans are dependent on black gold – which may soon cost as much as the precious metal. A current list of the state available to the “Krone” shows that 41 percent of domestic energy requirements are still covered by oil . The use of natural gas with a share of 14 percent and the equivalent of around 18,000 gas heaters is almost modest in comparison. Overall, fossil energy sources cover 57 percent. However, the country also refers to the other side of the coin. 43 percent of the energy requirement is covered by renewable sources. “Tyrol is well above the Austrian average of 33 percent,” it is emphasized. Logically, hydropower leads (22%), followed by wood and other forms such as solar energy.Energy transition slowed down by supply bottlenecksA look in the direction of the sun, however, reveals the problem with the energy transition. According to LR Johannes Tratter (ÖVP), there are currently around 9,200 photovoltaic systems with a peak output of 124 megawatts. This is equivalent to supplying around 27,500 households with electricity. The potential is far greater. However, exploiting it to the full is difficult. The will is there: the market for photovoltaics is currently experiencing a boom. This causes long waiting times and material bottlenecks. In order to achieve the state’s long-term expansion target of 3.9 terawatt hours of solar power, around 23.3 million square meters of module surfaces have to be installed on Tyrol’s roofs. But what do we need all the energy for? According to the state, 44 percent goes into buildings, a third into mobility, and the rest into production.
