5th stage of the Tour de France – Hindley with career highlight – Vingegaard distances Pogacar – Sport

  • Jai Hindley drives solo to victory at Laruns. Behind the Australian, Giulio Ciccone (ITA) and Felix Gall (AUT) complete the podium.
  • Jonas Vingegaard gets a lot of time in the duel for overall victory with Tadej Pogacar.

In the end, Jai Hindley was rewarded for his efforts on the 162.7km Pyrenees stage from Pau to Laruns. The Bora-Hansgrohe driver celebrated one of the greatest successes of his career. Before the finish, he dared to flee and did it solo. In the end he had a 32 second lead over Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and Felix Gall (Ag2r Citroën Team). For the first time since 2018, no Slovenian won in Laruns. Due to the large gap to Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates), Hindley also grabbed the “Maillot jaune”.

Favorites die in the last 20 kilometers

The wheat was separated from the chaff on the Col de Marie Blanque. The field, which was quite compact except for 2 escape groups, was suddenly blown up. Several drivers had to drop out, including big names like Tadej Pogacar, Adam Yates (both UAE Team Emirates) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). In the case of the latter, however, it was to be assumed, since the Belgian is not known as a climber.

However, race winner Hindley and last year’s winner Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) were able to advance: Hindley simply left his breakaway colleague Gall standing on the mountain and secured the last mountain classification points.

Vingegaard tried to catch Hindley and left Pogacar, the co-favorite for the overall victory, behind him when he started. On the flat section before the finish, Vingegaard really picked up the pace and ended up taking a 53-second lead over the Slovenian. These should be worth a lot later on in the tour.

Pogacar worried about girlfriend

Urska Zigart, girlfriend of Tadej Pogacar, suffered a fall in the women’s Giro d’Italia and suffered a concussion. For Pogacar, the seconds lost to Jonas Vingegaard are secondary as his thoughts are with his girlfriend.

Fog made for a tricky descent

In the descent from the Col de Soudet, the riders weren’t able to go full throttle. The weather conditions did not allow this. On the one hand, the track was still too wet from the rain, on the other hand, there was persistent fog, especially in the upper part. The Austrian Gall, who scored the mountain points solo, let his pursuers catch up with him again.

The race management decided not to neutralize the race and thus reduce the risk.

This is how it goes

There is no rest for the drivers. The 6th section from Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque demands everything from the teams again. The rolling up starts slowly, but after about 50 km the sprinters will position themselves for the sprint classification in Sarrancolin.

Then comes the first category 1 climb to the Col d’Aspin. But the real test is the hellish climb up the Tourmalet, which has an average gradient of 7.5 percent over 17 kilometres. The day’s winner will then be chosen after 145 km and a final climb to Camberet.
