Stan Wawrinka continues his run at the ATP 250 tournament in Metz and beats world number 4 Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 6: 4, 6: 7 (7: 9), 6: 3.

In the game against Daniil Medvedev, Stan Wawrinka looked like he was at his best at times. Fit on his feet, precise shots and always able to find a solution even in difficult situations. After the last 5 defeats in a row, the 37-year-old has now celebrated his 4th win in a row – against the world number 4.

In the round of 16 of the ATP 250 tournament in Metz, Wawrinka hardly gave his opponent a chance in the first set, especially on his own serve, and only conceded him 4 points. A single break to 4:3 was enough for the Swiss to win the set.

Break deficit made good

In the second set, favorite Medvedev got into the game better and made the break to make it 2-0. But Wawrinka hit back straight away. He secured the rebreak at the first opportunity. The only service breakthroughs remained, the tiebreak had to make the decision. There Wawrinka missed a match point, shortly afterwards the Russian secured the round with 9:7.

Wawrinka got off to a strong start in the deciding set and took a 3-0 lead. The three-time Grand Slam winner missed two break chances for a double break and 4-0 before he was broken himself just a few minutes later – after the 3-3 the set and the game were open again.

The third match ball sits

As is so often the case, Wawrinka was not unsettled by setbacks. He took the serve from Medvedev again to make it 5:3 and then served – after defending against a break chance – to win the match. After more than 2 hours and 20 minutes, it was finally the third match point that “Stan the Man” used to win.

In the next round, Wawrinka will meet Swede Mikael Ymer (ATP 100) on Friday. The 24-year-old beat Frenchman Grégoire Barrère (ATP 167) 6: 4, 6: 3 in the round of 16.
