The acclaimed and adored saga, “The Lord of the Rings” will it soon be back on the big screen? We take stock of the official projects to come.

On the occasion of the broadcast on TMC of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, we offer you a little focus on the upcoming feature films that will take place in Middle-earth! You won’t have to wait too long before finding the universe of author JRR Tolkien on the big screen.

After the cult Lord of the Rings trilogy in the early 2000s, Peter Jackson returned to this fantasy universe between 2012 and 2014 with The Hobbit, which divided fans. Since then, the franchise based on the work of JRR Tolkien has not reappeared on the big screen.

The war will rage in December!

On December 11th, The War of the Rohirrim will hit theaters and promises to be epic and intense! A first trailer was revealed on August 23rd and fans are very excited to discover Japanese director Kenji Kamiyama’s proposal for this animated film.

The story will focus on the powerful King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, and a legendary battle that helped shape Middle-earth. The action will take place approximately 250 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The plot will also expand on the mysterious tale surrounding the fortress of Helm’s Deep.

This animated prequel is inspired by the Appendices provided by JRR Tolkien at the end of The Return of the King (Appendix A, Chapter II: The House of Eorl). The film will notably feature a female character Hera, “neither a princess in distress nor a warrior”, the daughter of King Helm whose hand is coveted by Wulf, himself the son of Freca, the leader of the wild men clan.

Peter Jackson is not artistically involved in this project apart from his role as executive producer. However, his collaborator and screenwriter Philippa Boyens is a consultant on the film. Tensions between clans, threatened alliances, arranged marriages, turf wars and other intrigues are to be expected!

This feature film, lasting 2 hours and 10 minutes, benefited from the expertise of its Japanese director Kenji Kamiyama, a great lover of the universe created by Tolkien and adapted by Peter Jackson.

“I love the books very much, but the movies especially. I’m very honored to be a part of this story.” he declared at the Annecy festival last June. “I wanted my film to fit in with what had already been done. That there be a real collision between this new universe and the old one. It was not a question of making an animated version of what Peter Jackson did.”assured Kenji Kamiyama.

The Return of Gollum!

In May 2024, Warner Bros announced the return of the Lord of the Rings in live action to the cinema with The Hunt for Gollum! The film will be directed by Andy Serkis himself, who played the famous character in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit.

For the occasion, the actor will once again slip into his performance capture costume to play the famous character who accompanied Sam and Frodo to Mordor. If Andy Serkis is involved, Peter Jackson will also be involved as a producer.

His accomplices on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will write the screenplay with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Suffice to say that Hunt for Gollum is in good hands. Interviewed recently by Deadline, Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis and Philippa Boyens gave some details on their vision for The Hunt for Gollum.

“We really want to explore and deepen his story, delving into the little-known parts of his journey that we haven’t had time to do in the previous films. It’s too early to know who he’s going to cross paths with, but suffice it to say that we’ll be taking a page from Professor Tolkien.”Peter Jackson said.

For his part, Andy Serkis also spoke to discuss his involvement as director of The Hunt for Gollum. “The character has always followed me throughout these years. I have read all the books, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. So I know Tolkien’s universe perfectly; it has never left me since we shot the first films.”he explained.

“So it’s absolutely exciting to be able to go back and immerse ourselves in the world of Gollum. We’re going to study his psychology, and we’re going to try to make a film that fits into the canon of Lord of the Rings, but also brings something fresh with a totally new approach.”Andy Serkis said. The film is expected to be released in theaters in 2026.

While waiting for The War of the Rohirrim and The Hunt for Gollum, fans will be able to return to Middle-earth from August 29 on Prime Video with season 2 of The Rings of Power.
