6 degrees cold: – Two “castaways” swam in the Danube

The Danube is just six degrees “warm” – a temperature at which you normally do not want to go swimming. Two boaters in Upper Austria didn’t want that either, but ended up in the icy water due to a technical whoop. Luckily everything turned out fine.

Two 32-year-olds left a boat in the area of the Schlögen slipway (Grieskirchen district) in the Danube shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday and then drove upstream towards Niederranna. Suddenly the outboard motor snapped and the two immediately fell into the Danube. They were able to swim to the shore. With the engine still running, the boat circled roughly in the middle of the river, but was secured by the fire brigade a little later. The two were unharmed but hypothermic. They were warmed up in a fire engine and treated by rescue workers.
