6 things your gynecologist should never do

Many women experience abdominal pain when thinking about the upcoming check-up at the gynecologist. But you don't have to put up with these things at the appointment!

Once or twice a year, a check-up at the gynecologist (or gynecologist natürlich) should be on every woman's schedule. But many find this rather uncomfortable – after all, you feel a little at the mercy when the gynecologist examines the most intimate parts of the body. The thought can be reassured that as a patient you don't have to put up with everything. Your gynecologist should never do these six things – if you do, you should urgently find a new one!

1. He should never judge you

Unfortunately, it cannot be avoided that the gynecologist may ask you very personal questions – such as whether you currently have a partner or have regular sex. Nobody wants to get too close to you with that – The doctor simply wants to use these questions to find out whether he needs to examine you for pregnancy or venereal disease, for example. A good gynecologist only has your health in mind. Also, he should never make you feel ashamed of the answers to his questions.

And you don't have to put up with it when he makes strange comments about your explanations. If you feel uncomfortable about this, it is better to find a new doctor.

2. He should never project his personal views onto you

It shouldn't matter whether your doctor is against sex before marriage on a personal level – he is obliged to give you comprehensive advice to the best of your medical knowledge and belief. If you feel that he wants to push you towards a certain decision or in one direction, you have every right to end the appointment. Your body is yours and you are the one who makes the decisions!

3. He should never test you for anything without your knowledge

Openness is essential for a trusting relationship with your gynecologist. Therefore it should be a matter of course that your doctor explains all examinations and any tests to you. For example, if you suspect that you have an STD like chlamydia, you should get as many details about how to proceed with the treatment as you want – and you should have the good feeling that you can always ask if something is still unclear.

What is not possible at all: The doctor does not share his suspicion of an illness with you and has the corresponding test carried out without your knowledge. In such a case, you should change gynecologist immediately!

4. He should never say anything that makes you feel uncomfortable in your body

The skull tattoo on the right hip may have been a youth sin – but your doctor is not entitled to comment on it. He can only say something about your weight if it is necessary from a medical point of view – and he should proceed carefully. After all, thanks to beautiful advertising, Instagram and Co., many women are already insecure enough about their bodies.

5. He should never do anything without sufficiently explaining it

"So now it's getting a bit cold," is a typical sentence that you hear when you get ultrasound gel, for example, on your stomach. And that's right and important like this: With every medical check-up, the patient should be told what to expect and what the doctor plans to do.

In addition, it is clear that it becomes uncomfortable when he scans the inside of the vagina – but it shouldn't hurt. So don't be afraid to tell the gynecologist if you are in pain or extremely uncomfortable.

6. He should never abuse your trust

In Germany, medical confidentiality applies – that is, the doctor may not speak about the things you have entrusted to him without your consent. Of course there are exceptions, for example if there is a guardian or carer. Basically, however, you should be able to assume that your secrets are safe with your gynecologist – and not become the small talk topic of the medical assistant in the tea kitchen.
