6 things your vagina doesn't like at all

Taking care of your vagina is less complicated than it looks. There are more things you should never do under any circumstances, than there are absolutely things you must do. What can disturb the vaginal environment? Here's a list of things your vagina doesn't like at all.

1. Excessive hygiene

It almost seems counterintuitive, but the tendency to over-cleanliness can set the stage for infections. The vagina cleans itself very well, thanks to its lubricating actions and the billions of beneficial bacteria present. Too much hygiene can disturb the vaginal flora. Daily washing of the external intimate area with water is quite sufficient. In addition, gynecologists strongly advise against washing “inside the vagina” or douching.

2. Synthetic lingerie

Underwear made from synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or polyester, can retain moisture and heat, creating the perfect environment for yeast infection to develop. Instead, opt for cotton or silk underwear that will better ventilate your intimate area, in addition to keeping it dry.

Some lingerie tips you need to consider:

  • Favor natural fibers such as silk and cotton which allow the vagina to breathe.
  • Change your underwear every day, or even several times a day if you exercise for example.
  • Opt for an ecological and hypoallergenic laundry that is not aggressive for the skin.

3. Clothes that are too tight

Ditto for tight clothing such as leggings or jeans which increase perspiration, maceration of body fluids, and consequently the appearance of vulvar or vaginal yeast infection. If you are prone to yeast infection, choose looser clothing.

4. Integral hair removal

Pubic hair is not there by accident. They protect the labia majora and the vulva from external aggressions. The methods used to remove the hairs traumatize the tissues on which they grow. Shaving and waxing cause micro-cuts in the skin which can become infected, which can lead to inflammation and even infection. A shaved penis is not "cleaner" than a penis which is not, quite simply because the hairs are not dirty. Be careful, full hair removal does not represent "a danger". Everyone does as they see fit. However, here are some tips to avoid inconvenience:

  • When shaving, always use a clean razor and shave in the direction of growth to avoid increasing the risk of ingrown hairs.
  • Moisturize the pubis after waxing.

5. Wear panty liners every day

The panty liner is handy for keeping your underwear clean and dry. However, wearing them every day is not a good idea. Germs are not cleared the same way as with cotton panties and can build up on the sanitary pad, increasing the risk of irritation and yeast infection. According to an Italian SOPHY * study (Study On pH and Hygien), the panty liner increases the risk of yeast infection and D'vaginal infections if worn every day, almost 35%.

6. Menstrual sponges

Menstrual sponges (sea or synthetic) fit inside the vagina to absorb period blood. In his work This is my body (Iconoclast), the doctor Martin Winckler strongly advises against the use of these sponges: “The problem is, they often contain bacteria that are completely foreign to the vaginal ecology. Very difficult to disinfect, they are likely to promote toxic shock syndrome ”. Favor other periodic protections such as the period panties or the cup.
