60% increase in reports

Despite less strict confinement than in the spring, reports of domestic violence increased sharply during the second. Marlène Schiappa announces an increase of 60%.

The same health measures, the same consequences for domestic violence. During an interview with The Parisian published this Saturday, January 9, 2021, Marlène Schiappa announces that the online reporting platform for sexual and gender-based violence recorded a sharp increase in calls during the second confinement, which began at the end of October. In the spring, already, an increase had been noted.

"Even if it was less rigorous than the first, we observe paradoxically that [the second confinement] recorded more reports on the platform arretonslesviolences.gouv.fr", explains the Minister for Citizenship at Parisian. "In this case, an increase of 60% compared to a normal period, while this increase was 40% last spring", continues Marlène Schiappa.

How to explain such a finding when the confinement measures were less strict than during the first confinement? "With the pandemic, the looming economic and social crisis, there has been an extremely high level of tension since this fall, with fewer pressure relief valves for people who had to stay at home. It had an impact.", estimates the Minister Delegate.

If you are a witness or victim of domestic violence, you can ask for help on www.arretonslesviolences.gouv.fr or by contacting 3919, an anonymous and free number managed by the National Federation of Solidarity Women. In the event of immediate danger to the victim or to yourself, call the police or the gendarmerie by dialing 17. As a reminder, the curfew measures do not concern victims of domestic violence. They have the right to flee their homes without a certificate.
