60 percent want to continue building: Berliners refuse to stop the city motorway

Berliners reject the stop for the city motorway

There are elections in Berlin in September. Then it will also be decided what will become of the permanent political construction site A100. Citizens have a very clear opinion on this: 70 percent want the section started to be finished. 60 percent even support the continuation of the city motorway.

A clear majority of Berliners are in favor of ending the 16th construction section of the A100 city motorway – and thus against stopping construction or dismantling it. In a representative survey carried out by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the “Tagesspiegel”, 69.2 percent of those questioned said they supported the completion of the 16th construction phase between the Neukölln junction and Treptower Park. 22.7 percent of those questioned rejected the project, of which 18.2 percent clearly. 8.1 percent of the 1001 representatively selected respondents were undecided, reported the newspaper.

A majority of those surveyed also spoke out in favor of the further planned construction of the A100 to Friedrichshain and specifically to Storkower Straße (17th construction phase). 59.1 percent of those surveyed generally welcome the plans, 43.3 percent of them “very much”. 29.8 percent reject it, of which 22.8 percent are “very”.

Most recently, the Left Party demanded that construction work on Autobahn 100 between the Neukölln triangle and the junction in Treptow be stopped. The party rejects the construction of this section and does not want to build the 17th construction phase through Friedrichshain. Red-Red-Green had agreed in the coalition agreement not to carry out any planning preparations for the 17th construction phase during this legislative period. According to the text of the contract, the 16th construction phase should be completed at Treptower Park.

The green top candidate for the House of Representatives election, Bettina Jarasch, caused a stir in March with her criticism of the A100. She had spoken out in favor of the dismantling of the A100 on the section up to Treptower Park and with her statements provoked criticism from the Berlin economy. The SPD wants to complete the 16th construction phase and question the Berliners for a possible 17th construction phase, the newspaper wrote on.

Senate’s climate plan: ban burners from the city center

The next state election will decide in three months what the majority in Berlin will look like in the future. According to the latest “Berlin Trend”, the Greens remain the strongest force, but are only just ahead of the CDU. If a new House of Representatives were elected this Sunday, the Christian Democrats would have 21 percent and the Greens 22. The representative survey was carried out by Infratest dimap on behalf of the RBB “Abendschau” and the “Berliner Morgenpost”. Compared to the previous survey in April, the Greens receive five percentage points less. The CDU, on the other hand, gained three percentage points.

Election day in September should therefore be decisive for the future of the urban motorway. Just last week, the Green Transport Senator Regine Günther presented a climate plan for the capital, according to which the city center should be closed to petrol and diesel vehicles in less than ten years. This is initially planned for the area within the S-Bahn ring.
