According to a new poll, the French are now overwhelmingly in favor of wearing a mask outdoors and want it to become mandatory in open public places.

The French seem to be more and more in favor of wearing masks outdoors. Since Monday, July 20, wearing a mask is compulsory in all enclosed public places in the territory. According to a survey conducted between August 5 and 7 and published this Sunday, August 9 in the Sunday Newspaper, the French are now more and more in favor of wearing a mask in open public places. Indeed, 64% of our fellow citizens want it "become compulsory for anyone going to an open public place " against 36% who say they are opposed to it.

In mid-July, they were only 44% to be in favor of wearing a mask outdoors according to a poll conducted by Ifop-Fiducial for CNews and South Radio.

In recent days, the obligation to wear a mask outside has been spreading in several cities across the country, whether in the street, in public parks and gardens, markets but also the beaches and other tourist sites in Marseille, Ajaccio, Carcassonne, Bordeaux, Rennes or even Lille. As of Monday, August 10, it will be made compulsory in very busy areas of Paris but also in Seine-Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-Seine, Val-de-Marne and Val-d'Oise.

Professor of immunology Jean-François Delfraissy, head of the Scientific Council responsible for advising the government in managing the health crisis, believes that the obligation to wear a mask outside would simplify the government message and be binding "naturally". He also said that the situation of the evolution of the epidemic in France "seems contained but it remains very fragile". The scientific council had warned earlier this week that the situation could "switch at any time" towards a second uncontrolled wave.

France has experienced this Friday an unprecedented progression of the epidemic since last May with 2,288 new cases. "Some indicators reach very high levels, the clusters (grouped cases, N.D.L.R.) are certainly well identified but they are very numerous. Fortunately, there are no red flags in terms of hospitalizations. The epidemic looks different, it is affecting a younger population ", explained the professor of immunology, adding that it was necessary to "find the right message " to encourage young people to wear the mask.
