7 foods you should never put in the fridge

We tend to put all food in the fridge, without asking any questions. It is often a mistake. Some people don’t like the cold, which affects their consistency, their taste and their nutritional qualities. Here are 7 foods that have no place in our refrigerator.

Tomatoes

You should avoid putting your tomatoes in the vegetable drawer of your fridge because the cold air will not only stop the ripening process, but also break the cell walls of the fruit, making it bland and floury. The tomatoes risk losing their flavor. It is best to keep them in a bowl at room temperature.

Potatoes

The starch in potatoes tends to turn into sugar more quickly under the effect of cold, which makes their texture grainy after cooking. To preserve them, they must be stored in a cool, dry place away from light (under the sink for example), in a traditional potato bag.

Chocolate

Keep your chocolate bar in the refrigerator, especially when it’s hot? A false good idea. When placed in the refrigerator, a thin white film covers the chocolate. It is the fat it contains which rises under the effect of the cold. Chocolate loses its taste and flavor! We prefer to keep them in a cool but not cold place to enjoy it.

Melon and watermelon

In summer, nothing is more refreshing than melon and watermelon. And yet, it’s best not to put them in the fridge, as they will lose antioxidants and flavor. These fruits should be stored at room temperature in a dry place. To enjoy them fresh, cut slices to place in the fridge a few hours before the meal.

Onion

If the onions have not yet been peeled, they need a dry, cool and well-ventilated storage place. The humidity in the fridge softens them and makes them lose flavor and spiciness. Onions that have been freshly cut can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to seven days.

The banana

Putting bananas in the refrigerator is not advisable as it will darken them and lose their taste. If you want your bananas to stay green longer, you can place them in the fridge. Otherwise, leave them outdoors in your kitchen in a dry place to ripen them.

The bread

Bread is also one of those foods that are wrongly placed in the refrigerator. Big mistake: it ages faster at low temperature and loses taste. To keep your bread properly, wrap it in a clean, thick cloth (if that’s its only protection) or relatively thin if you put it in a bread box.
