7% of French people have neither a smartphone nor an Internet connection

7% of the population living in France has neither a smartphone nor Internet access at home. This is one of the main lessons that can be drawn from a survey published by INSEE on Monday 24 January and carried out among 12,000 people. However, 90% of the population has a telephone (fixed or mobile) and an Internet connection at home. Three-quarters even have a smartphone and a fixed Internet connection, 18% have one or the other.

Another lesson to be learned from this study is that the smartphone remains a must among 15-29 year olds, 94% of whom are equipped with it. This figure drops to 36% among those aged 75 and over, of whom, however, 80% have a simple mobile phone. The smartphone remains still and always a social marker in more ways than one. The rate of equipment actually goes from 53% to 92% between the least and the most qualified. This rate also depends on where you live: it is 70% outside the urban unit against 86% in the Paris unit). And the higher the standard of living, the more people are equipped with mobile phones.

Last but not least, having a telephone does not necessarily mean that you systematically pick up the slightest call: one in five people systematically filters or refuses calls. This behavior is more prevalent among people age 75 or older.
