8 washing mistakes that ruin your clothes

It seems very simple to do laundry, and yet we sometimes have unpleasant surprises! Zoom in on 8 washing mistakes we all make and which totally ruin our clothes.

Overdoing the laundry

No, adding more detergent will not wash your laundry better! Poured in too large a quantity, the detergent dissolves very poorly. Result: it leaves white marks on the laundry, and also creates mold in the machine. If you continue to pour the detergent “on the fly”, we recommend that you always have a graduated measuring ball with you. This helps prevent excess detergent, and therefore waste!

Mix colors

If you consider mixing colors to be a rookie’s mistake, think again! We all think we know it, but sometimes all it takes is a little carelessness for your white laundry to turn pink because of a red t-shirt that has accidentally slipped into your laundry. Always take the time to sort your clothes thoroughly before putting them in the washing machine. Or if not, add an anti-fade wipe.

Wash all clothes together

To keep them as long as possible, your fragile clothes should be washed separately. This is the case, for example, with lingerie. To protect them, place your panties and bras in a small net provided for this purpose before each wash. If you prefer not to take any risks, you can of course wash them by hand. This advice is also valid for your most fragile clothes, silk or wool.

Forget to make the pockets

Just forget a handkerchief in your trouser pocket, and your laundry is completely covered with small white pills. Before each machine wash, make sure that there is nothing left in the pockets of your clothes. Also watch out for small stones, coins, pliers and rubber bands left behind, you risk damaging the filter of the washing machine’s drain pump in the long term.

Do not take into account the label of a garment

If your clothes have tags, it’s not for nothing! These give valuable information on the washing conditions of the garment in question. Temperature, dry or machine washing, ironing, tumble dryer … You will find a lot of information there! If possible, avoid cutting them, even if they scratch and they are three meters long.

Overload the washing machine

All washing machines have maximum capacity. You must therefore always be careful not to overload the drum! If you put too many clothes in your machine, they are likely to come out badly washed and not necessarily smell good. In addition, overloading clothes may damage the washing machine. Better to do little laundry!

Leave zippers and buttons open

Leave the zippers and buttons open on our clothes before putting them in the washing machine, we have to admit: we never think about it! However, when they are open, the zippers risk catching other clothes and thus damaging them. And it’s the same with buttons. You will therefore be careful with your next laundry!

Do not treat stains before machine washing

Unfortunately, the washing machine does not remove all stains! Tomato sauce, coffee … Some stains are very tough and persistent, so soak the stained garment in hot soapy water, or use a stain remover before putting it in the drum of your washing machine. No need to rub your garment, you risk damaging the fabric, or even impregnating the stain even more.
