86 million spectators and soon an Oscar? This Netflix film breaks all records!

A record for “Le Cercle des neiges”. Big winner of the Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of the Césars, the feature film rose to second place among the most viewed non-English-speaking films on Netflix.

A true phenomenon in Spain, The Snow Circle has won over the whole world. Released on January 4 on Netflix, Juan Antonio Bayona’s film became the second most viewed non-English work throughout the history of the platform.

In total, 86.1 million subscribers would have discovered this reconstruction of the drama in the Andes Mountains, which occurred in 1972. Only the film Troll, a blockbuster from Norway released in 2021, did better with 103 million views.

A long-refused project

The success of The Snow Circle is a great revenge for Juan Antonio Bayona, to whom we owe The Orphanage, The Impossible and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The director fought for ten years for the project to see the light of day.

Very risky for its high-risk filming, the film was refused by all Spanish and international studios. Only Netflix agreed to take on the challenge. “They trusted us and gave us the means to achieve our ambitions“, the director told AlloCiné in an interview.

Spain represented at the Oscars

On the evening of Sunday, February 11, the feature film became the third most awarded Spanish film at the Goyas – the equivalent of the Césars or Oscars in Spain – with 12 awards. Again, a new record.

On March 11, the team will fly to Los Angeles for the 96th Academy Awards. Le Cercle des neiges is nominated twice – including in the category of Best International Film.

In addition to The Snow Circle, the Netflix platform also offers a documentary, entitled Who Were in the Mountain?, which looks back on the authentic testimonies of the survivors and the impressive filming.

The Snow Circle is available on Netflix.
