9-euro ticket successor from September? Now it has to be quick

The 9-euro ticket should be continued, at least if many of those involved have their way. But so far the federal government is waving the end on August 31st. If there is to be a successor, clarity must be found quickly, the transport companies are demanding.

Successor to the 9-euro ticket: time is of the essence

Millions of tickets sold, full trains, a low price, valid throughout Germany – the 9-euro ticket has become a real success, which the traffic light coalition can also take credit for. However, Chancellor Scholz, Finance Minister Lindner and Transport Minister Wissing are critical of a continuation. Time is of the essence.

The decision for a successor must as quickly as possible be taken, according to the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB). “The sooner there is clarity, the sooner the transport companies and transport associations can adapt and implement the measures” (source: Welt).

The colleagues at the Munich Transport Company (MVG) make it clear exactly what fast means: “If it is a ticket that can be bought for one calendar month – similar to the 9-euro ticket – it is a A lead time of at least four weeks is realistic. With other models, such as a subscription, implementation would take more time.”

One seamless continuation of the 9-euro ticket was recently brought into play by the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV). According to the proposal, the 9-euro ticket should continue to be offered at the current conditions until the end of October.

As the assessments from Munich and Berlin-Brandenburg show, there will soon be a time problem: If those responsible decide on a successor that does not work according to the previous scheme, there is practically too little time now to be able to do it by the end of August .

Without a 9-euro ticket: Public transport is facing a new price increase

Customers must therefore prepare for disappointment if they hope for cheap trips in September too. Especially since it is currently still completely open whether politicians will even get a successor on the way. If it comes to that, it will be later. Minister of Transport Volker Wissing last assumed early 2023.

Until then it gets more expensive: Many transport companies will return to their previous prices after the 9-euro ticket has expired. By the end of the year, in the Rhine-Main area, in Berlin-Brandenburg and Munich, for example, the regular price adjustments will be due in addition to the end of the 9-euro ticket. Commuters and train fans in recent weeks have to be prepared for expensive journeys.
