9-euro ticket: These tips are given by Deutsche Bahn

The 9-euro ticket sells amazingly. But that leads to problems in the trains. That’s what the railway advises. Plus: Current sales figures and this could continue with the 9-euro ticket.

The situation at the railway

Bahn AG has sold more than ten million 9-euro tickets to date. Customers purchased 52 percent of these digitally via the DB Navigator app and bahn.de. However, the 9-euro ticket is still available from around 5,500 DB ticket machines and in more than 400 DB travel centers.

In the first month of the 9-euro ticket, DB recorded a significant increase in passengers. In June 2022, the local trains of DB Regio were 10 to 15 percent more busy than before the start of the corona pandemic at the end of 2019. Demand for regional transport varies depending on the region, day of the week and time of day.

Bike transport on the train

Many cyclists also use the 9-euro ticket: in the first two weeks of the 9-euro ticket, DB Regio transported over a million cyclists with their bicycles. This leads to problems in the already full trains: not all passengers could always travel with their bicycles, especially on connections in popular tourist regions and on public holiday weekends.

The railway emphasizes: For safety reasons, the staff on the train can decide not to take any more bicycles with them.

That’s what the railway advises cyclists

Deutsche Bahn currently advises against taking bicycles on trains to popular tourist destinations from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

For day trips, DB recommends using alternatives such as Call-a-bike or other bicycle rentals and not taking a bicycle on the train, especially at the weekend.

If you want to take your bike on holiday but not on the train, you can use the DB luggage service. From July 1st to September 30th, DB is offering the combination of train and bicycle for EUR 29.90 in each direction. This means that bike shipping is 20 euros cheaper during this period. So many 9 euro tickets have been sold so far

A total of 21 million people bought the 9-euro ticket in June, as reported by Die Zeit. This is remarkable when you consider how many people have already owned a 9-euro ticket: in the form of a subscription ticket for local transport. It is said to be around ten million subscribers. In June 2022, the 9-euro ticket was available to around 31 million people in Germany.

Less traffic jams thanks to 9-euro tickets

The 9 euro ticket apparently leads to fewer traffic jams in the big cities. Tomtom came to this conclusion, as the Tagesschau reports: In 23 of the 26 cities surveyed, the level of congestion fell compared to the time before the ticket was introduced. Motorists in Hamburg and Wiesbaden in particular benefited accordingly.

What follows after the 9 euro ticket?

The question remains exciting as to how the use of local transport will continue after the end of the 9-euro ticket. Experts have long been demanding a continuation of cheap local transport services, as reported by the Tagesschau. But the FDP, whose tank discount, unlike the 9-euro ticket, shows no visible success, and Transport Minister Wissing are against this idea.
