In some families, many secrets resurface following a tragedy or the loss of a loved one and if some are harmless others can be very disturbing. A woman discovered 9 years after the death of her father, that he was hiding a big secret and he revealed everything to her in a letter. In her message posted on the Reddit forum, the young woman explains completely upset, that until then, she had not dared to open the box which contained the letter… She felt that her father had hidden something but she surely didn’t imagine that!
She explains : “I didn’t keep much from my father’s apartment after his death. I was afraid of what I might find. I only took a safe, but I only opened it 9 years after his death. I was afraid to open it because of what I might find because my dad’s apartment was filled with a lot of things I didn’t expect. Yesterday, while organizing my closet, I couldn’t stop staring at the box and for the first time I opened it. But the young woman did not expect to discover this letter and the story that her father hid from her all these years…

A dark, well-hidden secret
The woman recounts how she discovered this letter and her father’s story: “I opened the box and it contained a photo of a toddler who looked like me but that wasn’t me and a two-page letter with his handwriting. The first page contained information about his life that I already knew – but it was the second page that grabbed me.”
The young woman learns that the little boy in the photo is none other than her half-brother. Her father had a child before her but he never talked about it. She discovers in the letter the story he has been hiding from her all these years: “He confessed to me that he and his son’s mother had decided that she would raise the boy in another state. My oldest brother and his mother, according to the letter, died in a car accident, a year after this photo was taken. He never really recovered from this story but he never managed to cry about it. He met my mother a year and a half after my brother died and they got married the following year”
This story explains a lot for the young woman, indeed her dad had a lot of trouble showing his affection for her… Visibly very saddened by this discovery, she confides: “As I would have liked him to tell me all this while he was alive, I surely could have helped him. Despite everything, I love my father, I miss him, and I finally understood why he was like that.” Internet users gave him a lot of support under his message posted on Reddit.
