A Swiss women’s metal band is conquering the world: The Burning Witches from Brugg AG are about to become the country’s most successful rock export. The five women from Aargau have given over 100 interviews in the last four weeks, and the media from Europe, the USA and South America are vying for the Swiss women. “We can hardly keep up with the demand,” says Romana Kalkuhl (31), guitarist and founder of the band, to Blick. “It’s really crazy.”
The reason for the great media interest: The Burning Witches are one of the few all-women bands in the metal genre and will be releasing their new album “The Witch of the North” on May 28th. “This is our best record so far,” says Kalkuhl enthusiastically. “Our sound now sounds even more epic.”
Music colleagues and best friends
The witches, who have already appeared on the big stages in England and France and at the legendary Wacken Open Air in Germany, produced their new album in just one year. “Since all appearances and concerts were canceled due to Corona in the last few months, we had enough time to write new songs.”
The five women spent almost every other day in the rehearsal room and in the studio. «That made us as a band even closer together. We are no longer just fellow musicians, but also best friends. ” Appropriately, her current single is called “We Stand as One” (in German: “We are one”).
Video shoot on the Rigi
The witches on the Rigi shot the video clip for their new single. “The Swiss mountains offer the necessary pathos for the song – simply beautiful,” explains Romana and adds with a laugh: “Only when headbanging did we have to be careful not to fall because we were standing dangerously close to the abyss with our high heels.”
There is no doubt: 2021 is the year of the Burning Witches, which can also be seen live again: “We’re playing on a metal cruise on Lake Constance this summer and, if everything goes well, we will go on a European tour from September.”
The Swiss witches are also fought overseas. Kalkuhl: “We already have inquiries for a major tour through the USA and one through South America.”
