Having your own four wheels is once again the most popular means of transport for holidays this year. Whether camper or car, they are both the first choice for long-distance road trips (here you will find our general tips on vacationing by car).
The Swiss are not only drawn to the south. In addition to France, Italy, Portugal and Spain, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Great Britain are currently popular. This emerges from the analysis of the market research institute Argyou on the online search behavior of the German-speaking Swiss.
That’s what gangsters are looking for
The holiday season is high season for thieves. The fully packed cargo space is less interesting, because the bath towel from your favorite football club can hardly be turned into money. But wallets, smartphones, tablets, digi cameras or one or the other designer sunglasses are lucrative prey.
The car itself is also interesting for tourists from Switzerland. The Swiss tend to drive newer and more expensive cars that are still well maintained.
That scares thieves
With a few tricks, however, you can make your car much less attractive to gangsters. Never leave valuables lying open in the car, activate the central locking from the inside. Preferably park in guarded or at least busy places, as this makes work more difficult for car crackers.
It is usually safer away from the tourist hotspots. But also depending on the country you have to be more or less careful. Germany and Austria are considered to be fairly safe. More mindfulness is recommended in the south.
Be prepared in any case
Sometimes the worst cannot be prevented, even with the greatest care. Here, too, it is important to be secure. For example, it is helpful to have all important documents with you in digital form. In this way, you can continue to identify yourself, not only in the event of theft, but also if the papers are lost.
The online insurance portal FinanceScout24 recommends calling your insurance company in advance to check it out. Clarify whether your household contents and comprehensive insurance cover theft and damage to property abroad.
