- FC Basel defeated Winterthur 3-1 away in the 21st round of the Super League.
- Thierno Barry redeems himself and his team with his first two goals. At Winterthur, two players were sent off.
- In the other game on Tuesday, YB celebrated a 5-1 win against Yverdon.
Even when they were twice outnumbered, Winterthur didn’t give up. In the 79th minute, Loïc Lüthi nodded a cross from Samir Ramizi past Basel keeper Marwin Hitz into the goal – 1:2.
The tension was back on the Schützenwiese. But the Eulachstädters couldn’t really get into the opposing half. And at the latest after Renato Veiga made it 3-1 in stoppage time, the fair was said.
Barry ends bear market
FCB thus achieved its second championship victory in a row – for the first time since April 2023. The man of the game was someone who had previously been repeatedly referred to as a “death of chance”: Thierno Barry.
The 24-year-old ended his goal drought. In the 13th minute he scored his first goal in the championship in his 19th Super League game and with his 27th goal. And he went one better: just under 20 minutes before the end he made it 2-0.
Yellow, yellow-red, yellow, yellow-red
At this point, coach Patrick Frame’s team only had nine players left. Granit Lekaj and Randy Schneider were sent off with yellow and red within four minutes:
- 49th minute: Barry passes Lekaj on the left wing. He leaves his leg and is warned by referee Alessandro Dudic.
- 50th minute: Schneider hits Basel’s Finn van Breemen on the heel. But he sees yellow.
- 53rd minute: After a free kick was missed for Winterthur, Lekaj complained to the referee. The receipt follows immediately: with yellow-red in the shower.
- 56th minute: Schneider holds Veiga back on the edge of the Winterthur penalty area. His working day also ends early.
From Winterthur’s perspective, the game had started very badly. Aldin Turkes injured his left foot with practically the first action of the game in a challenge with Van Breemen. At this point, seven (!) seconds had been completed.
