Fast, efficient memory and large capacities for the next generations of smartphones.
November 2021. We have to go back to November 2021 to find Samsung’s first announcement around LPDDR5X, a type of low-consumption memory logically designed for smartphones.
Since this presentation, things have evolved quite a bit, and LPDDR5X has become the standard memory for high-end smartphones, but it is still not fast enough for some manufacturers.
Faster, more efficient
We will remember that at the time of this November 2021 presentation, Samsung was talking about LPDDR5X that was 1.3 times faster than LPDDR5, and which consumed 20% less energy.
We will especially remember speeds announced at 8.5 Gbps when LPDDR5 caps at 6.4 Gbps and LPDDR4X is completely behind at 4.2 Gbps. However, as we said, this is still not fast enough for a manufacturer like Samsung, which is now making its own advertising.
The South Korean company actually specifies that its new generation of LPDDR5X is 25% faster than the previous one, offers 30% greater capacity and provides 25% better efficiency.
Artificial intelligence in the crosshairs
Engraved with Samsung’s 12nm process, this new LPDDR5X is logically denser and allows the brand to reduce the size of its chips, to the point of being ” the smallest LPDDRs on the market “.
To keep up with the times, Samsung links its progress to the needs of modern tasks and, in particular, to applications linked to artificial intelligence. Samsung specifies that the speeds authorized by its new LPDDR5X go up to 10.7 Gbps, as opposed to the 9.6 Gbps of the previous, most advanced models.
The brand also emphasizes that it is now possible to package 32 GB chips for mobiles, but does not plan to launch mass production before the second half of this year. Smartphones thus equipped should logically follow.
