Season 2 of House of the Dragonprequel to Game Of Thrones, started on the streaming service Max (HBO). With brand new and bloody credits.
Season 2 of House of the Dragon has been broadcast since this Sunday, June 16, 2024, on the new streaming platform Max (HBO). The war continues to brew, but now a small aesthetic change has slipped in: a brand new theme song. This had never happened in Game Of Thrones. What does this new show opening from the HBO series?
The Targaryens Tapestry
The Season 1 credits depicted the Targaryen family tree, with a purple (bloody) river guiding us through a stone city — King’s Landing.
That of season 2 completely changes atmosphere: the new credits are a tapestry, directly inspired by the famous Bayeux tapestry. Made at the beginning of the 11th century, it relates events between the end of the reign of Edward the Confessor up to the Battle of Hastings, and all the twists and turns that go with it. There are more than 600 characters there.
This generic House of the Dragon in the form of a tapestry – with a new bloody weave, however – tells the story of the Targaryens, but more in the form of a family tree. The beginning is in Old Valyria, when the Targaryens begin to tame the dragons.
Then we see a volcano: it is the Scourge of Valyria, a cataclysm which caused the region to disappear by fragmenting it into islands.
Then the tapestry unfolds the rest of the history of the Targaryens, notably showing Aegon the Conqueror and his ride to conquer all of Westeros.
Historical events in Targaryen history continue to move quickly — such as the death of Maegor I known as The Cruel — to the present. We then see the current characters, with the events of season 1, starting with Alicent Hightower in her green dress; then Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Just after, the division between the Blacks and the Greens, which we witnessed during season 1 of House of the Dragonis also represented.
We then see Aegon II on the Iron Throne, and Rhaenyra on that of Dragonstone, before the final image of the tapestry represents the final plot twist of season 1 of House of the Dragon : Aemond and Vhagar killing Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Rhaenyra’s son) and his dragon Arrax.
The rest of the events remain to be discovered during this season 2, which has 8 episodes.
