Jack Dorsey became world famous as the co-founder of Twitter. Now he has resigned as head of the service.

Jack Dorsey (45) is stepping down as Twitter boss with immediate effect. This is what the co-founder of the popular social media platform said on November 29th. After almost 16 years in several roles in the company, he decided “it is finally time for me to leave”. Dorsey explained this in an email to the staff, the content of which he has also published on Twitter.

With immediate effect, the previous chief technology officer Parag Agrawal will take over the CEO role. Dorsey wants to sit on the board of directors until around May to help with the transition. Then he wants to get out completely. The 45-year-old confirms that the resignation is his own decision and that he stands by it.

“Hello mum!”

Of course, this decision was difficult: “I love this service and this company and all of you so much. I am really sad, but also really happy.” There aren’t many founders who put a company in front of their own ego. At the end, Dorsey announced: “I tweet this email. My only wish is that Twitter Inc. is the most transparent company in the world. Hello mom!”

Dorsey founded Twitter in 2006. The first official tweet on the platform he posted on March 21 of the same year: “just setting up my twttr”. For the 15th anniversary, he auctioned the contribution for the equivalent of around 2.4 million euros. The money was converted into bitcoin and donated to the organization GiveDirectly, which among other things offers Corona emergency aid in Africa.
