Up to 150 km/h – hurricane gusts caused numerous operations

The start of the week was more than uncomfortable: the distinctive cold front brought hurricane gusts, snow and sleet showers. The bad weather led to a number of accidents, and the fire brigades were in constant use.

At the start of the week, a cold front had a firm grip on Styria. In Upper Styria there was a lot of fresh snow and hurricane gusts of up to 150 km/h. Between Ausseerland and Mariazellerland, a number of vehicle drivers struggled with the snowdrifts and the strong wind. Sleet showers also endangered road safety in places. Numerous accidents The poor road conditions also led to accidents: there were two collisions with three vehicles each on the Ennstal federal road: one in St. Martin am Grimming and one in Espang. There were a total of five slightly injured, one car had to be recovered, and the B320 near Mitterberg was closed for an hour and a half. In Predlitz-Turrach, a truck came off the B97 and crashed into the volunteer fire department’s equipment house. The truck driver was not injured. For the fire brigades, the winter activity meant increased deployment. Fallen trees also had to be removed from roads. Even the lifts in many ski areas stood still: Winter enthusiasts could not indulge in skiing fun on the Reiteralm or the Turracherhöhe. Better weather prospects on Tuesday Fortunately, the snowfall is gradually decreasing and it will be a little warmer again on Tuesday. In the south, temperatures rise to up to 10 degrees. But be careful: Heavy storms can sweep over the mountains again. This also increases the risk of avalanches.
