A UK government source has denied Boris Johnson plans to announce a breach of the terms of Northern Ireland protocol on Friday.
Asked about the subject, a spokesperson for Downing Street replied that no decision had been taken for the time being by the British government. He added that “the situation was now very serious”.
In a post on The Spectator magazine’s website, Robert Peston wrote that the British government intended “to use its legislative powers to breach treaty obligations on the Northern Irish Protocol”.
“He will suspend all customs checks on goods going from Britain to Northern Ireland, which form an important part of the Brexit deal with the EU,” he added.
Earlier today, the British government expressed its willingness to take all necessary steps to preserve peace in Northern Ireland, asking for more flexibility from the EU in discussions on the Northern Irish protocol.
