The Nintendo Switch has been dominating the console market for over 5 years now – and there seems to be no end in sight. But that could be a problem for Nintendo. Because the president of the company has a big concern when it comes to the successor to the popular handheld console.
Switch successor presents Nintendo with a difficult task
The Nintendo Switch has now sold almost 108 million units. And even if the sales figures have fallen by almost 20 percent compared to last year, the handheld family is still one of the absolute console bestsellers.
But the Switch isn’t getting any younger either. After all, Nintendo’s gold donkey is now more than 5 years old. So is it about time for a sequel? Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa made it clear in a question-and-answer session with the company’s investors that the launch of the next generation of consoles also brings with it a potential problem.
He describes it as follows:
“Unlike in the past, we continue to have a large selection of games to release five years from now. That’s because the Nintendo Switch had such a smooth launch that has allowed us to focus all of our development resources on a single platform. However, the question of whether we will be able to transition from the Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware just as smoothly is a major concern for us.
Based on our experience with the Wii, Nintendo DS and other hardware, it’s very clear that one of the biggest obstacles is making the transition from one piece of hardware to the next as smooth as possible.”

Switch Pro still unlikely
But what about a 4K version of the current Nintendo Switch? According to the official statement from Nintendo, the company is planning not to launch another model after the OLED version.
While these plans could theoretically change at any time, we now also assume that Nintendo would prefer a Switch Pro will unveil the official successor in a few years. When the time will come is currently still open – but you shouldn’t expect it before 2024. We will keep you up to date.
