Last weekend, Portugal relied solely on renewable energies to ensure its energy consumption.
The major global projections from the International Energy Agency (IAEA) announce that renewable energies should be the primary source of electricity by 2025. Good news for the environment, but which is not described in the detail what the production of each country will be on this date. Some should indeed be much better students than the average nation in this area, as we have seen with Portugal recently.
More renewable electricity produced than consumed
Produce electricity using only renewable energies? An idea which for us at the moment seems like a simple fantasy. But not with our southern Lusitanian friends, who had a special time during the last weekend of October.
Indeed, according to PV Magazine, between the evening of Friday October 27 and the morning of Monday October 30, Portugal produced a total of 172.5 GWh of electricity from renewable energies. An impressive figure when compared to the electricity consumed over the same period by the country’s citizens, namely 131.1 GWh.
The winning combo of wind and hydroelectricity
Exceptional figures which originate from optimal weather conditions. The wind blew enough to allow wind farms to produce 97.6 GWh, while the country’s hydroelectric power stations produced 68.3 GWh. The remaining 6.6 GWh is due to photovoltaic installations.
The success is such that Portugal has not only been able to rely solely on renewable energy for its consumption, but has been able to export the surplus to its Spanish neighbor. Enough to push this nation of around ten million inhabitants to continue its investments in the sector, of which it is currently one of the European leaders.
