a “70% brighter” G3 and HDMI 2.1 QMS

LG has just lifted the veil on the OLED A3, B3, C3, G3 and Z3 of 2023. Let’s take a look at what’s new and changed this year.

A few hours before the official announcement, LG Electronics Germany uploaded a blog post with LG’s new line of OLED TVs. These are the A3, B3, C3, G3 and Z3.

What’s new for the 2023 generation?

These are among the best-selling televisions, in any case, certainly the most popular. It must be said that LG Electronics is in the same group as LG Display, the designer and manufacturer of OLED panels used by LG, Philips, Panasonic and so on. The difference, however, is that LG is no longer the only one to manufacture OLED panels for televisions, since we will soon know the second generation of QD-OLED from Samsung Display.

Let’s go back to this 2023 generation. We can summarize the new features quite quickly: the LG OLED G3 are now equipped with the Brightness Booster Max to achieve significantly higher brightness. Regarding the entire 2023 range, the televisions benefit from an overhaul of webOS, but also from HDMI 2.1 QMS.

Brightness, brightness and brightness!

The Z3, G3 and C3 series TVs continue to spearhead the LG OLED 2023 lineup. These three series feature LG OLED evo technology with the all-new processor AI Alpha 9 Gen6 4K. LG Electronics refers to ” higher brightness and color accuracy, as well as incredible clarity and detail”.

As usual, the biggest change is for the LG OLED evo G3 series with technology Brightness Booster Maxwhich includes an all-new light control architecture, as well as light amplification algorithms to increase brightness up to 70%. These figures will have to be verified in the tests.

As a reminder, on the LG OLED G2, we measured a peak brightness of 946 cd/m² for a 10% window (the LG 65G1 was measured at 785 cd/m²). The small subtlety here is that the 70% increase is in comparison to the LG OLED A3 and B3 (the entry level).

It will also be necessary to differentiate between the G3s in 55, 65 and 77 inches. LG promises differences on the 83 and 97 inch diagonal, 30 to 40% brighter. An LG spokesperson said the maximum brightness of the G3 will be of the order of 1800nits and ” maybe slightly brighter with Vivid setting “.

The LG Z3 (the 8K definition model) should peak at 1350 nits (Vivid) while the C3 and B3 remain largely unchanged from last year’s C2 and B2 in terms of brightness.

Note that LG Electronics has made great efforts on the G3, with an aesthetic change for even more style and elegance in the living room: thanks to the One Wall design, there will be no visible space after wall mounting .

Still no DTS support, but this year’s LG OLEDs can be easily connected to LG soundbars that offer soundsurround exceptional multi-channel with IMAX Enhanced powered by DTS:X.

There is no new sizes for OLED ranges this year, which means the B3 will be available in 55-77 inches, the C3 in 42-83 inches, the G3 in 55-97 inches, and the Z3 in 77 and 88 inches. Finally, there is the A3 (up to 60 Hz), the entry level, in 48 and 77 inches.

HDMI 2.1 QMS and webOS 23

The other notable new features are HDMI 2.1 QMS and webOS 23. This HDMI 2.1 QMS is brand new: Apple TV (2022) is also compatible. Basically, QMS VRR prevents black screens that occur when switching between content playing at different frame rates. This happens when you switch from 24 frames per second (24Hz) content such as a movie, to TV content broadcast at 50 frames per second (50Hz) or even 60 frames per second (60Hz).

Finally, webOS 23 is also mentioned by LG Electronics. As a reminder, it is the home OS that equips LG televisions. As usual, LG will not update older generations of LG TVs. webOS 23 is therefore reserved for the 2023 generation.

This year, LG promises a simpler and much faster interface. It is now separated in two, but it still seems to integrate recommendation modules and advertising.

On the main screen, there’s a large carousel with partner-sponsored content, a row of user-customizable “quick cards,” and a row of installed apps. Quick Cards can open new sections such as “Game”, “Music”, “Sport” and “Home Office”.

On the second screen, scroll down, you’ll find highlighted content from partners and a “Now Streaming” section with tabs for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and other streaming services LG partners with. associated.
