“A bad signal sent to children”: Coline Berry-Rojtman’s lawyer reacts after her client’s conviction

More than a year after the complaint filed against her father for sexual violence, the eldest daughter of actor Richard Berry, Coline Berry-Rojtman, was sentenced Thursday by the Aurillac court for defamation of her ex-mother-in-law Jeane Manson , and announces to appeal the decision.

“It is a dismaying decision, of great violence, and a bad signal sent to the children”, declared Thursday Me Shebabo, deploring that this judgment comes while the investigation into the facts is still in progress. “Parents, aggressors and known, have good days ahead of them,” added Coline Berry-Rojtman’s lawyer. In her eyes, this decision is quite simply an “invitation to be silent”, she also lamented in an interview published by Gala.fr. “That’s what it costs today in France to denounce his abusive father,” she regretted.

On February 14, 2021, in an article published by Le Monde, Coline Berry-Rojtman spoke of the sexual violence she allegedly suffered as a minor, in 1984 and 1985, at the home of her father who was then living with Jeane Manson, accused of having participated with him to these attacks.

20,000 euros in damages

The 71-year-old former singer had decided to sue her ex-daughter-in-law for defamation in court in Aurillac, in Cantal, where she lives part of the year. The court agreed with him and sentenced Coline Berry-Rojtman, 46, to a fine of 2,000 euros for defamation following this article and the television program ‘Le Live BFM’, in which she claimed that Jeane Manson was part of the Children of God sect.

The actor’s daughter will also have to pay 20,000 euros in damages to her former mother-in-law, as well as 5,000 euros in legal costs. Also implicated, the journalists of Le Monde and the daily newspaper were not condemned.

The hearing was notably marked by an incident: Richard Berry’s current companion, Pascale Louage, got up and slapped Coline Berry-Rojtman, according to testimonies collected by AFP. “In twenty years at the bar, I have never seen this. It is all the difficulty of the victims of incest to denounce the facts: one is obliged to strike to make them shut up , had declared Karine Shebabo, who lodged a complaint.
