Russia wanted to take Kyiv, but is now entrenched in southern and eastern Ukraine
When Russian troops marched into Ukraine on the night of February 24, their goal was clear: to capture the capital, Kyiv, as quickly as possible. Although the attackers besieged Kyiv, they did not succeed in conquering the city throughout the first month of the war. At the beginning of April, Russia has to withdraw its soldiers from their environs.
