In the radius of the latest unusual information, we remember in particular this father who had cut off the Internet in an entire village in France to deprive his screens of screens, or even this iPhone forgotten in a plane which traveled the whole world for weeks.

This time, the unusual story comes to us from the other side of the Atlantic, in Canada more precisely. In effect, several municipalities in British Columbia were deprived of internet connection and power for several hours. Whose fault is it ? To a beaver.

Indeed, on June 7, 2022, the inhabitants of several villages in this region of Canada found themselves cut off from the world because ofa beaver who decided to cut his teeth on two power lines and a line of fiber optic cable, as reported by our colleagues from the CTV News site.

A beaver deprives several municipalities of internet and power in Canada

21 customers were without power for several hours, while around ten municipalities no longer had access to the Internet and the telephone. The technical teams of BC Hydro, the company that manages the production, transmission and distribution of electricity in this province of the country, quickly identified the presence of a beaver near the facilities concerned.

In addition to the damage caused to the previously mentioned cables, the rodent had left several bite marks on trees near the affected lines. As the spokesperson for BC Hydro points out, these incidents remain rare in Canada, even if they do happen from time to time in certain swampy areas, which are particularly popular with beavers.

Lee Brain, the mayor of Prince Rupert, one of the towns affected by the outage, explains thata single fiber optic cable connects his city to Prince George, located several hundred kilometers inland. In fact, if something went wrong on this cable, there was no additional way to maintain the connection.

Nevertheless, the mayor wanted to be reassuring to his aggrieved constituents, recalling thatanother fiber optic line must be installed between Prince Rupert and Vancouverr. “If another falls again, we will all still have internet via the line coming from the ocean”, he guaranteed.
