A big plus in terms of safety: new ABS for e-bikes from Bosch presented

E BIKE

Bosch introduces a new anti-lock braking system for e-bikes. The ABS should work optimally with e-cargo bikes, e-mountain bikes or e-touring bikes. The braking distance can be read from the display.

  • Bosch is presenting an ABS for e-bikes at the Eurobike in Frankfurt.
  • According to the manufacturer, the system is the “smallest ABS in the world developed on the basis of motorcycle technology”.
  • The anti-lock braking system also prevents the rear wheel from lifting off.

Do e-bikes need an anti-lock braking system? Definitely, says Bosch. According to our own research, 29 percent of all accidents involving e-bikes could be prevented or mitigated if ABS were installed. The German manufacturer provides further arguments for ABS in e-bikes.

E-bike innovations of the year

Many people avoid the front wheel brake, which is essential for an effective braking manoeuvre, for fear of rolling over and prefer to use the back pedal or rear wheel brake. In addition to correct braking technique, different road surfaces and surfaces play a role, but above all the different types of e-bikes. A fully loaded cargo bike on urban asphalt naturally behaves differently when braking than an e-mountain bike riding downhill on the muddy single trail.

Therefore, the ABS generation presented at the Eurobike in Frankfurt with different modes should do justice to every riding style and every e-bike category (ABS Cargo, ABS Touring, ABS Allroad, ABS Trail). The control unit has been reduced in size by 77 percent compared to the previous generation and now also weighs significantly less. A statement from the company states:

The ABS is activated automatically as soon as you start pedaling. Two basic functions that make the braking and riding experience significantly safer are decisive for the effectiveness of the Bosch eBike ABS. The anti-lock function on the front wheel automatically regulates the brake pressure by constantly monitoring the speed of the wheels and preventing the tires from locking when braking. The sensitively tuned braking behavior promotes control and stability, especially on slippery surfaces.

The rear wheel lift control reduces the risk of the rear wheel lifting off on slippery surfaces. Because it reduces the likelihood of a rollover, the function makes an important contribution to safer and accident-free driving.

ABS cannot be retrofitted

The new generation of ABS will be available from summer 2022 and will be used in smart e-bikes with Bosch components. Braking processes can even be analyzed using the Kiosk 300 on-board computer. Retrofitting the ABS on existing e-bikes or bicycles is not possible. We will introduce you to other e-bike highlights of the year at this point.
