Google intends to significantly improve the audio quality of calls made with its Pixel Buds Pro. This is what we learn from 9to5Googlewhich reports that the firm is about to deploy a new update larger than those launched since the worldwide release of the headphones, in July 2022. As a reminder, the latter had made it possible to deploy a 5-band equalizer on the Buds Pro ( and better left/right balance) in October, then technology Space Audio in March.

According to a source interviewed by the specialized media, the next update of the Buds Pro, described as major, would therefore focus this time on the quality of calls. And in this case Google would rather see things big. In particular, the firm would like to deploy on its premium headphones a technology equivalent to the Clear Calling introduced on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro last December.

Premium call quality to match Pixel 7

As a reminder, this technology filters out background noise. It improves the quality of the voices so that we can better hear our interlocutors in noisy environments, such as in a city center, in transport, or in a department store for example.

On the Pixel 7s, it relies on the Tensor G2 chip to work and is not able to support VoIP calls from messaging apps. It is unknown at this stage how its equivalent will work on the Pixel Buds Pro, if the system will be fully integrated into the headphones, or if on the contrary they will have to pair with a Pixel smartphone to take advantage of it.

Either way, this major new update to the Pixel Buds Pro will bring support for the ” Super Wide Band speech “. This function also contributes to improving the quality of voice exchanges by increasing them from 16 to 32 kHz. To do this, Google has already started to integrate this functionality into Android’s Bluetooth functions. In this regard, and as pointed out 9to5GoogleTHE Super Wide Band speech looks like a big improvement in HD Voice technology (itself enabled by VoLTE).

Hearing well-being functions as a bonus?

Super Wide Band speech is the maximum audio bandwidth provided by 5G voice services and many over-the-top (OTT) voice services », Details for its part the Bluetooth SIG. Pending further details, we understand that it will probably require adjustments at the level of 5G operators for this technology to work optimally.

Expected in the coming months without further details for the time being, the next update to the Pixel Buds Pro should finally equip them with new well-being functions related to hearing. We do not know the precise details, but 9to5Google considers that it should make it possible to analyze what we listen to, and at what volume, in order to propose recommendations for preserving hearing. Perhaps Google will even go further with this bouquet of functions… even if it means eyeing Apple to offer an analysis of the sound levels of the environment.
