A blessing in disguise – young mountain rescuer swept away by an avalanche on tour

Shocking moment for four mountain rescuers in St. Anton am Arlberg! While on a tour together, a 21-year-old suddenly triggered an avalanche on Saturday. The young man was lucky and wasn’t buried. However, he had to be taken to hospital with injuries.

The four friends started from the Rendl ski area in the direction of Darmstädter Hütte and further towards the eastern gorge of the Scheibler. From there the group headed north. “After just a few turns, a 21-year-old Austrian triggered a snow slab avalanche that was around 150 meters wide and carried him around 200 meters away,” the police say. Rescued by a police helicopter When the avalanche came to a standstill, the local man was on top snow surface and was therefore not buried. However, he sustained significant injuries. His three friends were not affected by the avalanche and immediately made an emergency call. The 21-year-old was rescued by the police helicopter and flown into the valley. The three uninjured mountain rescuers were able to descend into the valley independently. Fallen due to changing snow conditions. Already in the early hours of the morning, a 50-year-old Austrian woman in Stummerberg climbed with her touring skis from the Teifentalalm to the 1,998 meter high Heutaljoch with her touring skis together with another five alpinists. After the six winter sports enthusiasts had reached the summit, the group drove off towards “Hemerergrund”. “The 50-year-old fell due to the changing snow conditions and was seriously injured,” the police said. The woman was rescued by an emergency helicopter and flown to the district hospital in Schwaz. The remaining group members continued their tour.
