a booklet to help parents better understand digital tools

A report of 120 proposals against school bullying, formalized on Tuesday, October 12, recommends better training parents in digital tools to support young people.

In France, Unicef estimates that 700,000 students are victims of school bullying, half of them severely. Harassment takes place in primary schools (12%), middle school (10%) and high school (4%)… but also on the Internet. In fact, 40% of students say they have already been the victims of aggression or meanness online, according to the platform No to harassment.

Train parents

To fight against this scourge, a report commissioned by former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and containing 120 proposals, recommends training parents in digital tools.

As the document attests, children have access to smartphones earlier and earlier. In 2013, only 12.1% of students had their first cell phone at 10 years old. In 2016, they were 15.9%.

If they have faster access to the Internet and social networks, many parents remain overwhelmed by the operation of new platforms for young people, such as Snapchat or TikTok. The report therefore suggests supporting them with the help of a "Booklet devoted to good practices of digital tools". Parents have a big role to play in preventing bullying online. Still according to No to harassment, they are indeed the first to provide help and advice in terms of Internet safety (60%). If they are better trained, they will be able to better support their children.

The report also suggests "Develop training in digital uses for the entire teaching staff".
