The Terminator creator talks about the movie sequel and what to expect, which could well divide some audiences. We explain why.
It’s been 40 years since Terminator hit the big screen, and since then, the franchise has seen many twists and turns. While the first two films directed by James Cameron remain classics, the sequels have not always managed to convince audiences. Despite everything, Cameron remains optimistic and believes that Terminator may still have a future. But for this to happen, a radical change is needed.
A new direction for Terminator
James Cameron recently shared his vision for the future of Terminator. In an interview, he explains that the franchise must detach itself from the symbols and characters of the previous films. For him, it is time to “throw overboard”“everything related to the last 40 years of Terminator. That means saying goodbye to iconic figures like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 or Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor. He says those elements no longer resonate as much with younger generations.
Cameron is convinced that today’s young viewers are much less attached to these references to the past. He explains that “You get too caught up in the details of the past and you lose a new audience because they care less about those things than you think.“So he wants to focus on new stories that can reach a wider audience, as he did with Avatar.
What makes the soul of Terminator
Even without the iconic characters, Cameron believes the essence of Terminator can endure. It reminds us that the strength of the saga lies in ordinary protagonists, fighting for their survival in a hostile world, often without the support of the institutions in place. This theme of survival against an implacable threat, especially with artificial intelligence in the background, remains relevant today.
For Cameron, these fundamental principles are even more relevant today. “Powerless characters fighting against AI is a solid foundation for storytelling today.“, he emphasizes. He is therefore convinced that by introducing new characters and keeping this central aspect, Terminator can not only come back, but succeed in seducing again.
