A circular OLED central screen for the new Mini

Since its revival following the takeover by BMW, the Mini brand has managed to find a nice balance between tradition and modernity. The new generation is no exception to the interior, including the interior. Indeed, it retains the round block in the center of the dashboard like the previous versions, but this time it is, and it is therefore a first, a circular OLED screen of course touch.

The British brand has bet a lot on this element, because we know that multimedia and connected functions are now at the heart of consumer expectations. Brand Director Stefanie Wurst said: “With the new MINI family, we are taking a big step into the digital world while continuing the brand’s signature heritage. The emblematic central screen of the new MINIs is circular and for the first time offers content adapted to this shape. I am convinced that the digital power of the new models will delight our customers all over the world”.

An Android-based system

This circular format imposes a specific interface in order to be fully exploited. To do this, the engineers rolled up their sleeves to develop Mini Operating System 9, a version based for the first time on the Open Source version of Android, in other words AOSP (Android Open Source Project). The user can instantly switch to Mini Experience modes (8 modes available at most) for a personalized experience by acting on the mood light, the design of the screen interface, but also the driving parameters. It is even possible to associate a projector which diffuses graphic elements over the entire dashboard, and the head-up display.
The electric versions are accompanied by a unique acoustic repertoire of around thirty sound signals, some of which are audible outside the vehicle to warn pedestrians of the Mini’s arrival. A voice personal assistant is also present and responds to the “Hey Mini” command to easily control many features.

Navigation goes to the Cloud

Mini Operating System 9 also brings with it a new cloud-based navigation system. The driver will thus be able to benefit from the most recent map data at all times. The Augmented View option arrives for even more information and truly optimal guidance. 3D visualization of buildings answers the call, as does optimized route planning for charging electric versions. An application store can complete the user experience with games or music or video streaming. For all these connected functions, the car can integrate 5G.
