It’s been several months since Hideo Kojima teased his work, but the creator seems to be preparing a surprise announcement for Death Stranding.
Death Stranding 2 was revealed in December 2022, but since then nothing has happened. We still had some slight information on the ambitions of this sequel. But no gameplay trailer. It must be said that Hideo Kojima has been totally taken by the recording of performance sessions captured in recent months. Nevertheless, things could finally move if we are to believe a photo posted by the Japanese designer. See you at the end of August?
A Death Stranding announcement very soon?
After having squatted for a long time in Los Angeles to shoot scenes of death stranding 2Hideo Kojima got back behind his PC and launched his editing software. “I haven’t used this editing software for a long time. I forgot how to do it again” he wrote on Twitter with a blurred image of the screen in the background. At first glance, one would be tempted to say that he is preparing a gameplay trailer for Death Stranding 2. But one detail might not stick. In the foreground, we clearly distinguish a fake Rotten Tomatoes tomato. The film review site which lists the opinions of professionals and spectators on films and series.
If we assume that this is a real teaser, we would therefore be looking at a trailer for the movie Death Stranding and not the next PS5 game. What reinforces this feeling is the new visit of Hideo Kojima to the premises of A24 at the end of July. A production and distribution company behind Midsommar and Beau is Afraid by Ari Aster, Moonlight or The Green Knight. Feature films that are far from the Hollywood tumult, which would go perfectly with the movie Death Stranding.
The Japanese creator, father of Metal Gear Solid, Policenauts Or Snatcherdoes not want a big show adaptation. “I received a lot of offers, but from the start, my intention was never to make a blockbuster. Alex Lebovici from Hammerstone Studios shared my vision. I was offered to do a big movie, with famous actors and explosions, but what would explosions be for in Death Stranding? I’m also not looking to make money, but rather to have a more artistic approach, and the only person to follow me was Alex Lebovici”.
In this same interview granted to IGN, Hideo Kojima said that he did not want to ape his own game. The cinema being a different medium, the adaptation must be too and that is why we do not may not see the title characters again.
“We have not yet made a decision on this subject (note: to bring back Sam Porter Bridges or other protagonists). If movie adaptations of games failed, it’s because they were aimed at gamers, right? They have the same style and I don’t want the Death Stranding movie to be like that. Instead, I opted for an approach of changing and evolving the world of DS to suit cinema. I designed Death Stranding as a game, and games are games. It is not necessary to make films of it. In a way, the feature film takes a direction that has never been seen. I need to do something that might inspire people watching it to become creators in 10 or 20 years.”
As for the concept of Death Stranding 2, it could be as original or even more than the first episode, but for the moment, we have no certainties. Just a few leads that may be totally wrong by the way. The sequel should in any case put the hairs to the players because the composer Ludvig Forsell still signs the soundtrack of DS2.
Whether it’s a trailer for the film, which would be a very unexpected surprise because the project is ultimately very recent, or for the next video game adventure, the announcement could take place at Gamescom 2023.
