A cycling star dies tragically during a banal training

Italian cycling is in mourning. Davide Rebellin was fatally broke on November 30, 2022 in the north of the country, reports The Team. The tragedy occurred in the middle of the day near Vicenza, located between Verona and Venice, in the Veneto region. The Italian cyclist was hit by a truck during an ordinary training session. Citing first testimonies, the sports daily writes that “the truck that caused the accident at the exit of a crossroads would have fled and would still be wanted by the police”. According to information from Il Giornale di Vicenzathe authorities do not yet know whether or not he realized what had happened. “The carabinieri are working to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident and to find the driver of the truck”says the Italian newspaper.

Davide Rebellin had just formalized his retirement

After thirty years on pedals, the 51-year-old racing cyclist had formalized his retirement on October 16, at the end of the last European race of the season: the Veneto Classic. Following the tragedy, the Swiss Radio Television (RTS) goes back to his “very long career”. Davide Rebellin has won the Flèche wallonne three times, in 2004, 2007 and 2009. He won the Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2004 and the Amstel Gold Race the same year. He had also shone in stage races like Paris-Nice (2008) and Tirreno-Adriatico (2001). But several doping cases had come to put a spoke in his wheels. While he had been crowned Olympic vice-champion at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, his silver medal had been withdrawn. Davide Rebellin was then suspended for two years after testing positive for EPO.
